Bambi Bains is a versatile, British Asian artist who specialises in a range music. As well as creating music she is a dancer, actress, model, and YouTube beauty guru.
Being nominated as the Best Newcomer by the BritAsia Music Awards and winning Best Acting Performance in 2016 by The Bangra Awards, contributed to Bambi’s rapid rise in the music industry. Many of you may remember that Bambi made it to the semi-finals in Britain Got Talent in 2017.
Bambi is certainly not one to stick to the norm. She is continuously raising the bar and showcasing her her talents on the most sought after platforms, as we saw this year when she performed at Pride Park stadium.
And then Glastonbury 2022. Yes, British Asian Bambi Bain was on center stage at Glastonbury, an achievement worth outstanding praise and recognition. Bambi continues to make her mark alongside leading artists such as Bastille, sharing a stage at The Hundred 2022.
Asians UK had the pleasure of catching-up with ground-breaking Bambi Bains:
Did winning the school talent show at a young age inspire you to go into the music industry?
Yes. Winning the school talent show inspired me the most! It was my high school teacher that pushed me down the avenue into my career as my family wasn’t supportive.
So, you’re a self-taught Bhangra artist, what motivated you to do this?
I attended a predominately white populated high school, so the South Asian culture wasn’t around as much as I hoped for. Going into the music industry, I had to learn the attitude and twang and then make it my own.
You were a young Asian girl in the early 2000’s hitting the music scene, how did your family and friends react to this?
My friends have always stood by me but I have never boasted about being an artist. When it came to family, my dad and brother supported me but my mum wanted me to get a real job so I was able to look after myself.
What was the hardest obstacle you have faced and how did you overcome this?
The music industry is male-dominated and being a female really set me back because the industry provides more benefits for them. I didn’t give up, being quite boisterous myself and knowing how to behave in situations helped me push through.
You recently signed a publishing deal with Sony, what has this meant for your career?
This publishing deal has given me so many sessions with top artists so I’m learning new skills. It’s a route I have always wanted to take, combining both industry music together.
So, where did the name Bambi come from?
People think it’s a stage name but its not. My Aunt, Dads youngest sister, passed away 8 months before I was born. Bambi was her nickname so my dad named me after her.
Other than your phone, what 3 things would you never leave the house without?
House keys, ID and lip balm.
What’s the secret to having perfect skin?
Drinking a minimum of 2.5 litres of bottled water a day is the biggest benefit in my opinion.
There are many British Asian artists, unfortunately, most are limited to the British Asian music scene. You have successfully performed at leading mainstream festivals, how have you managed to cross this invisible barrier?
The music I create cross pollinates industries, a barrier I broke by default. Viewers have picked up on this and have invited me to shows as artists didn’t believe the industries could be successfully combined.
Any pearls of wisdom for the younger women out there who aspire to be the next Bambi Bains?
To not let defeat get the best of you. One thing that keeps me going is I don’t want to be on my death bed and think what if but think I tried my best.
Finally, what’s in the pipeline?
I have started working on my first album that people can stream and if all goes well, I want to start my own intimate headline shows.
