Sunday 25 April 2021 India recorded 350,000+ daily COVID-19 cases

For the 5th consecutive day India has set a world record for the most new coronavirus cases. More than 350,000 COVID-19 infections within 24 hours, this is an increase of 5,600 from Saturday.

Hospitals are at full capacity, oxygen is in short supply however, the number of confirmed cases continues to increase at an alarming rate.

Recorded deaths for Sunday were a heart wrenching 2,800 (actual figures believed to be much higher), taking India’s death toll total to 195,000+ (according to John Hopkin’s University).

India’s largest and most renowned city, Mumbai has been hardest hit, with over 4.2 million confirmed infections (according to Covid19India.org). Monica from Southhall shares,

“We are in a state of complete shock and devastation, most of my mother’s family is in Mumbai. She lost a sibling yesterday and many more members of the family are critically ill and there is nothing we can do”.

These sentiments are being shared by many British Indians who for the first time are feeling worlds apart from their loved ones, unable to support them and provide relief.

Following media profiling countries have started to step up and pledge support, this includes: Pakistan (who despite any political differences were one of the first to offer their neighbour support), UK, Singapore, China and finally the US. Tech giants Microsoft and Google have also publicly pledged to help.

British Indian’s with family in South India have shared that for now their families are safe and cases within the South of India are stable – may they remain protected.

Our thoughts and prays with the people of India.
